Nearly New Pop-Up Sale

Thank you so much to everyone who donated to and attended the Nearly New Sale last week and to the many volunteers who worked so hard to make it happen!

The sale was a huge success with all monies raised going toward the school's Christmas Hamper fund.

We had a surplus of shoes in our inventory, and these were donated to Centre Flavie Laurent, a local organization whose mission is to provide comfort and support to the impoverished and the vulnerable by distributing goods at no cost. Flavie Laurent was very grateful for our donation. Thank you, Christa A., for dropping them off on behalf of the school!

We will be asking for donations of your son’s gently used St. Paul’s logo wear and suits later this Fall. Watch the Weekly for announcements. Our next sale will take place in November.

If you have any questions about the Nearly New pop-up, feel free to contact volunteer Tess Bernacki at 204-930-7170.

Week of Truth and Reconciliation

Truth and Reconciliation Week at St. Paul’s will be recognized from September 23–27 and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is Monday, 30 September. Throughout the week students, staff and families are encouraged to honour the lost children and Survivors of residential institutions, their families, and communities. St. Paul’s staff and students will be participating in educational opportunities of remembrance and reconciliation. Our school remains committed to ongoing learning and formation with respect to reconciliation and collaboration will all Indigenous and Non-Indigenous communities.

Monday, 23 September: Semester 1 Course Change Deadline

This date is the deadline for submitting requests for Semester 1 course changes. Students should contact their counsellor before this deadline to ensure their course change is considered.

Wednesday, 25 September: Orange Shirt Day & School Assembly

St. Paul's invites all staff and students to wear orange shirts. Grade 9 students, along with new Grade 10–12 students, will be provided with a school-designed orange shirt. Orange Shirt Day is an Indigenous-led grassroots commemorative day that honours the children who survived Indian Residential Schools and remembers those who did not. This day relates to the experience of Phyllis Webstad, a Northern Secwpemc (Shuswap) from the Stswecem'c Xgat'tem First Nation, on her first day of school, where she arrived dressed in a new orange shirt, which was taken from her. It is now a symbol of the stripping away of culture, freedom and self-esteem experienced by Indigenous children over generations. (Source: Government of Canada National Day for Truth and Reconciliation).

Assembly: Wednesday, 25 September

Schedule Change: We are moving from from Schedule III to Schedule V to allow for time for students to debrief after the assembly. Students should report to their core group locations at 8:30 a.m.

Guest Speaker: Cecil Sveinson currently serves as the Manager of Indigenous Relations for the City of Winnipeg. Prior to that he served as a police officer for 25 years. His primary area of expertise is around systemic racism, human rights, and Indigenous history and culture. In his person life Cecil and his family participate and lead the traditional ceremonies of his ancestors, including the pipe, sweat lodge and sun dance. He is a husband, father and grandfather.

Any students that received an orange t-shirt in a previous school year can purchase a new t-shirt from the Cru Shoppe

Grades 10 and 11 Students: Ignatian Service Registration

University and Scholarship Information

On Tuesday, September 17th all grade 12 students attended a presentation about university and scholarships.  A recording of this presentation will be available to parents next week. One scholarship discussed was the Loran Award.

The Loran Award is valued at more than $100,000 over four years of university undergraduate studies, including an annual stipend, matching tuition waivers, mentorship, funding for summer work experiences, and participation in an extensive network of past and present Loran Scholars. Selected on the basis of strength of character, commitment to service, and the potential for leadership, Loran Scholars are young people who are humble, inquisitive, and thoughtful; who shun the status quo and pursue unique paths; who collaborate and bring others along; and who will act in the face of injustices to build a better future for all.

General information can be found at: Loran Scholarship

The application deadline is October 15th, 2024.

Another scholarship with an early application deadline that was sent to students this week is the AES Engineers Essay Scholarship: https://aesengineers.com/scholarships.php

The AES Engineers Essay Scholarship is open to all students going into any faculty. Students must submit an essay of between 500 and 1,000 words in answer to the following question:

When you look back on your life in 30 years, what would it take for you to consider your life successful? What relationships or accomplishments will be important on this journey?

Amount of award: $500.00
Deadline for entry: October 8, 2024

Grade 12 students were also sent a list of university terminology that may be helpful in navigating the university application process, as well as a list of important dates for the entire academic year such as Open Houses for local universities, the Canadian Universities' Fair, and scholarship and application deadlines.
